God Is Our Refuge
— Psalm 46:11 (KJV)
In a world marked by chaos, conflict, and fear, this verse stands as a fortress of truth for God’s people. The Lord of hosts—Yahweh Sabaoth—is not distant or indifferent. He is **with us**. His covenantal faithfulness is grounded not in our merit but in His unchanging promises, rooted in His relationship with His people, even as with Jacob.
To call God our "refuge" is to declare that in Him we find safety from spiritual storms, a hiding place from sin’s accusations, and rest in the midst of trial. The Reformation truth that God is our fortress (as Luther famously wrote) springs from passages like this—where God's sovereign protection and presence give peace to those justified by grace through faith.
In Hebrew poetry, the word Selah invites us to pause and reflect. Let us reflect, then, on this comforting truth: **we are never alone**. The God who commands angel armies is the same God who gently shepherds His people.
Supporting Scripture
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1
Application
Are you anxious, overwhelmed, or weary from life’s burdens? Pause today and remember who is with you. Not merely a companion, but the Lord of hosts Himself—mighty to save, powerful to uphold, and faithful to the end. In prayer and in His Word, run to your Refuge. Let this truth steady your soul, even when the mountains tremble.
Lord of hosts, You are my refuge and strength. Thank You for being with me in every season. Help me to trust not in myself, but in Your sovereign care and unfailing love. Let Your presence calm my heart today. In Christ's name, Amen.
